The Grin and Grimace of Life
“If there is one thing the history of evolution has taught us, it is that life will not be contained. Life breaks free. Life expands to new territories and it crashes through barriers. Painfully, perhaps even dangerously. But life finds a way.”
This sub-collection of photographs showcases a small research station inside the Ecuadorian Amazon that was constructed to support research efforts to preserve the environment like thousands of other initiatives around the world. However, it quickly becomes obvious from these photographs that our efforts to conserve the environment and to protect life are often driven by guilt rather than a sense of responsibility or stewardship. Even more importantly, these photographs show that the environment naturally or unnaturally adapts to human constructs, begging the question: does the environment need saving for its sake or for humankind’s sake?
